X/Twitter Updates Terms of Service to Use Posts for AI Training
Unique and valuable datasets are now one of the most valuable things in the world. Stack Overflow / Twitter / Reddit put up barriers so they are the only ones who build AI models with the data. The public data was always going to be trained on... as it has been anywhere. Stack Overflow already built a training model on their data, and Meta is going to do the same with Threads and other apps. So we view this development as inevitable.
Elon was always going to build a model on the data and use it for X.AI
The updated terms mean that X/Twitter will use public data to train AI models, which could potentially impact the way users experience the platform and the internet as a whole. For example, AI-generated definitions could control not only what users see on Twitter but also what search results appear on Google or which news stories show up in their Facebook feeds.
This change comes as AI-written posts have been found to perform better than human-written tweets in terms of engagement. The use of AI to write social posts raises questions about the impact on engagement and reach, as well as whether the Twitter algorithm penalizes AI-written tweets.
Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, will train on users' public data, but not on direct messages or other private informationMusk has previously stated that xAI would use "public tweets" to train its AI models. He has also accused other tech giants of leveraging Twitter to train their AI models, even threatening Microsoft with a potential lawsuit for alleged illegal use of Twitter data
As X/Twitter moves forward with this new policy, it remains to be seen how users will react and what implications this will have on the overall user experience and the broader internet landscape.
