Watch: Art On The Sphere, World’s Largest Digital Canvas

Sep 5, 2023
Digital artist Refik Anadol is set to showcase his art on the world's largest LED screen, enveloping the exterior of Las Vegas's Sphere, a 366-foot-tall globe-shaped venue opening on September 29. The Sphere's exterior, dubbed the "Exosphere," is a 580,000-square-foot programmable LED screen.
Anadol's creation, "Machine Hallucinations: Sphere," is an AI-generated data sculpture that will launch the Exosphere art program on September 1, running for four months. The artwork utilizes machine learning to craft large-scale animated abstractions from public data, with themes spanning outer space, nature, and urban landscapes. The first segment of the artwork comprises 1.1 million images from satellites and telescopes, while the second draws from 300 million photos of nature and environmental data. The Sphere's innovative design, costing over $2 billion and seven years in the making, offers an immersive entertainment experience inside. Sphere Entertainment's Guy Barnett labeled Anadol as the ideal inaugural artist for the Sphere art program due to his blend of science, technology, and architectural fascination. Born in Istanbul and based in L.A., Anadol has previously presented his AI-generated "living paintings" at various prominent venues.
