An innovative AI road safety camera on the A30 near Launceston has snapped 300 drivers in a mere three days for offenses like using phones or skipping seatbelts. This camera, a UK first, was trialed last year by Vision Zero South West in collaboration with tech company Acusensus. During the 15-day trial, it spotted 590 seatbelt and 45 mobile phone violations in Devon and Cornwall. The portable system offers round-the-clock monitoring at various spots. While AI spots potential offences, humans review all captures. Depending on the offence's gravity, drivers might receive a warning or a prosecution notice. Adrian Leisk, the road safety chief for Devon and Cornwall Police, emphasized the dangers of not wearing seatbelts and using phones while driving, urging drivers to stow phones out of reach during trips.
