Pew Research: Most Adults Fear AI Will Decrease Their Quality of Life

Aug 31, 2023
A recent survey by Pew Research Center reveals that the majority of Americans are more concerned than excited about the impact of AI on daily life. The survey, which polled more than 11,000 US adults, reports that the number of people more concerned than excited about AI jumped from 37% in 2021 to 52% in August 2023. The results come at a time when a growing number of people are paying attention to news about AI. The fear of the technology’s harmful effects is outpacing the excitement of its helpfulness, according to the poll.
The survey did not ask about AI's potential to help or hurt discrimination, which is a significant concern given years of evidence showing that AI systems can amplify patterns of discrimination. The survey also found that people with higher levels of education and income are more likely to be excited about AI's potential benefits than those with lower levels of education and income.
College degrees and income aren’t essential for excitement around, and excellence in, AI. At FTB, we're striving to democratize AI learning resources and foster relevant skills for the bad asses of tomorrow. Our goal is to enable as many individuals as possible to enhance their earning potential, in a job market where AI maestros are getting paid up to $1m a year! You’ll see a series of free knowledge courses hitting the site and newsletter in the coming weeks. Now is the time to level up and become a beast!

The survey results are consistent with other studies that have found that people are increasingly worried about the impact of AI on society. A recent report by the World Economic Forum found that AI is one of the top three concerns for business leaders around the world. The report also found that AI is expected to displace millions of jobs in the coming years. Another study by the Brookings Institution found that AI is likely to have a significant impact on the labor market, with low-skilled workers being the most vulnerable to job displacement.
AI will not replace all workers. But, people effectively utilizing AI as a tool to replace certain functions or roles will replace humans who don't.

As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into our daily lives, it is important to consider the potential risks and benefits of this technology. While AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and improve our lives in countless ways, it is also important to address concerns about its impact on society, including issues of bias, privacy, and job displacement. As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to have open and honest conversations about the role of AI in our lives and work together to ensure that this technology is used in a way that benefits everyone.
