Hollywood vs. AI - The Writer’s Strike Continues (1)
TABLE OF CONTENTS
The Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) publicly released its counteroffer to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) on Tuesday, promising higher wages, better streaming residuals, and job security. The AMPTP’s proposal also touches on the use of AI, stating that writers wouldn’t receive less compensation for rewriting work produced by AI or for developing a script based on an AI-generated story.
The WGA strike covers a lot of grievances, but AI has become increasingly more important as writers (and Hollywood at large) are witnessing AI toolsets evolve in real time. All while studios are launching AI incubators. Crazy times in SoCal.
Plus, they're offering a peek behind the streaming curtain with quarterly reports on viewing hours. But the WGA isn't impressed. After a less-than-warm chat with bigwig CEOs, they claim the AMPTP's move is less about negotiation and more about pressure. With writers striking since May and actors joining in July, the drama off-screen is just as compelling as any Hollywood script.
