ChatGPT, known for revolutionizing web search and other tasks, has been identified as a tool in a social media crypto scam on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. Indiana University Bloomington researchers uncovered a botnet, named Fox8, linked to cryptocurrency websites. This botnet, with over 1,140 accounts, utilized ChatGPT to create posts and respond to them, aiming to direct users to crypto-promoting sites.
The fascinating note here is ChatGPT was creating AND responding to posts. This is, essentially, a turnkey “automated disinformation” farm.

Micah Musser, an AI-disinformation expert, believes this could be just the beginning, with other undetected campaigns possibly being more advanced. The botnet was discovered due to its use of a common ChatGPT phrase, indicating a lack of sophistication.
If this wasn’t ‘sophisticated’, one could believe many sophisticated botnets are already in use. Sounds like we’re entering the age of Cambridge Analytica for anyone.

Despite this, the botnet successfully posted numerous persuasive messages, raising concerns about the potential misuse of advanced chatbots in the future.
