Bumble: AI Helps Dating & Bolsters App Security

Sep 1, 2023
In a bold move to enhance user experience and safety, dating app company Bumble has revamped its community guidelines to crack down on bots, ghosting, and doxing. The updated policies will apply to Bumble, its sister app Badoo, and the newly released Bumble For Friends (BFF) app.
💡
This happened at the same time the CEO, Whitney Wolfe, said AI can help matchmaking and “flirting”. A rep said “we see more opportunities to integrate AI further into our user journey, as this is just the tip of the iceberg in using AI to improve our curation and the quality of the connections we make”. AI flirting? Will need more details on that one.
Bumble's Battle Against Bots
Bumble is taking a stand against bots by banning actions that artificially influence "connections, matching, conversations, or engagement through the use of automation or scripting". The company has already blocked over 8.2 million accounts this year across its properties, with a majority of them detected by the company's AI for fake and spam accounts. Bumble has been investing in machine-learning models to make its platform safer, even open-sourcing its algorithm to detect unsolicited nudes last year.
💡
We’re not sure what’s more impressive… the AI used to make 8 MILLION spam accounts (Bumble only has 50 Million users and a couple million paying) or the AI used to detect that many fake account. Interest that 16% percent relative to user base is the same ratio estimated for other platforms like Facebook.
Ghosting Also Gets the Boot
Ghosting, the act of suddenly cutting off all communication without explanation, is now classified as bullying and abusive conduct under Bumble's updated policies. To enforce these rules, Bumble will rely on user reports, with a human moderator fact-checking the information before taking action.
